Post by: hayabusa666666 on January 15, 2010, 12:46:54 PM
Hello fellows,
I am looking for the medical term of the phenomenon whereby intraoperatively the brain starts to bulge out of the craniotomy site due to different causes of increased ICP, eg hematoma due to mayfield head holder or bursed aneurysm, decrease jugular vein return due to malposition of the head, inadequate level of anesthesia, coughing....
please help me out about this term.... it is important for my thesis work
regards..............

I was going to say that this is called transcranial herniation, but after a quick view on Wikipedia I found the correct term to be TRANSCALVARIAL HERNIATION.

depending on the site of herniation. transcranial is a universal term, whereas transcalvarian points to the upper half of the cranial fossa :)
